Another Reason For Fasting

I’m going to be sharing another breakthrough that I see from the Bible about fasting – and yet another reason to fast.

I’m on my fourteenth day of a fast today.

I’ve been drinking just water and lots of it!

I had a couple times where I’ve exerted myself a little bit to the excess and got dizzy, so I wouldn’t recommend that…

So I’m trying to keep very extraneous activities to a minimum.

So, the Lord woke me up very early this morning and I couldn’t go back to sleep so I came downstairs and I opened my Bible and just happened to be 1 Kings, which is a book thatI’ve been reading a lot lately.

And he brought me to 1 Kings 19 and – lo and behold! – another message from fasting.

Just to give you a little lead up to what’s happening here is, Elijah had already seen and done a lot of miracles, and he was led to a brook where he was fed meat by Ravens every day. And then he was led over to a village where a widow fed him every day – miraculously, food continued to appear.

And then who was called out to confront Ahab and Jezebel, and her false prophets. The Lord appeared there as well and he did an amazing miracle that turned everybody to know who the real God was.

For that reason – and some other reasons – Jezebel said that she was going to go after Elijah and have him killed. So Elijah fled and 1 Kings 19:3-5 says:

3 Elijah was afraid[a] and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, 4 while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” 5 Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep.

All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.”

I don’t know if you ever been at a time of despair – at a time when you think that everything is lost and there’s no way out. Perhaps you are battling with something that is discouraging to even wake up to every morning, and every night you go to sleep you may not even wish you’re alive, and this is the point where he’s at – he’s in despair and he’s discouraged as he fell asleep.

He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.

The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.

Here you see Elijah going on a 40 day/40 night fast when he did not eat – at all!

The Word of The Lord Came

Then he went into a cave and spent the night, and the word of the Lord came to him!

Here’s a perfect example of a breakthrough – the word of Lord coming to Elijah after a major fast.

I think that’s an easy one to brush through – to just read over – because you’ve seen so many miracles through Elijah and he wa a prophet, so the word of the Lord came to him a lot.

But here it shows me, specifically, that at a time of discouragement when he didn’t even want to keep his own life, he was given a long task by an angel of 40 days and 40 nights, so you need this food and that was his call into a fast. He went those 40 days and 40 nights not eating and at the very end of that he got a major breakthrough: the word of the Lord came.

The word of the Lord came at that point and encouraged him. The word of the Lord came and gave him direction.

As you read through, you will see that’s when he met Elisha who received his mantel, and many miracles happened thereafter.

I want to encourage you today: if you’re at a place of discouragement and you feel like maybe there’s not a lot to live for, and you need a word from the Lord – you need direction from the Lord. I believe the Lord would be pleased with you going into a fast. Fasting and praying for the Lord.

You see, a lot of these men in the Bible weren’t called into a fast when they went into a fast, they just knew that fasting was something that they did in order to get a breakthrough. So, it’s really important that you understand you don’t have to just wait until the circumstances are right.

The time to fast is right when you need a breakthrough from the Lord!

You want something magnificent, something great to happen? The promises of the Bible are true and you WILL receive what you’re looking for.

  • You will receive a word from the Lord.
  • You will receive encouragement from the Lord.
  • You will receive direction in your life so that you have a purpose to live for.

I hope this blessed you. I’m going to be sharing some more as we go along, but I want to encourage you to stay strong in your fast and and believe God for the strength that you need through.
